Caffeine, Burnout & An Open/Undefined Root – Human Design ::

As someone with an undefined Root, navigating a dysregulated HPA Axis has been part of my health journey, and I wanted to share some of my takeaways.

The Root in Human Design is a pressure center, and it’s linked to the adrenal glands.

It is the place in the body graph where we process stress, and anytime I share with someone with an open/undefined root, they get it.

The Root is found at the very bottom of your chart. If you have an open or undefined root, it is white in your chart (example pictured below), and you do not have a natural processing system for stress. If it is white with gates circled (like below), it is undefined. If it is white with no gates, then it is completely open. If yours is completely open, you are more sensitive to external pressure here.

Anything open/undefined in the body graph is similar to a sponge. You are taking on the energy of that part of your chart from others. You can always change how porous your sponge is through de-conditioning, but it will still always be a sponge.

So, with an open or undefined Root, there is this deep need to get rid of the pressure of stress. You take on the stress and hustle and bustle from the world around you, and you feel like you can’t rest until you get rid of the pressure, finish all the tasks, or get out of the energy of others.

When you are conditioned, your to-do list often stresses you, feeling like you can’t relax until everything is done. There is this deep pressure stressing you out until you’re able to relieve the thing putting pressure on you.

Conditioned people with undefined Roots often appear to very stressed out, in a hurry, and can even fall into chatastrophizing when major things happen that create stress. They have no natural way of processing the stress so it can feel very overwhelming to them. Which can then also be overwhelming to those on the receiving end of someone with an undefined Root’s reaction.  I KNOW I have heard “chill out” or “it’s not that big of a deal” many times from people in my life when something major has created the stress and pressure. But when you have an undefined Root, and no way to process the stress, it’s stressful.

60% of the world has a defined Root so, it’s very common for you to be conditioned and take on the stress and pressure from others.

You go into the office, you’re stressed.

You go online, you’re stressed.

You hang out with a friend, a partner, or a parent with a defined root, you’re stressed.

And you feel this immense amount of pressure that needs to be released.

The problem with being around this conditioning 60% of the time, is that we get used to it. We think operating in overdrive is normal, or it “helps” us get things done “more efficiently” so we become reliant on the stress.

And healthy expressions of slow down can feel like boredom, apathy, or laziness.

The thing with excess cortisol is it helps you get things done.

It helps you “keep up.”

You’re in a rush against an imaginary clock so, you tend to be very productive.

Or so you think, until one day your adrenals burn out and you fall into adrenal fatigue.

Now, I’m not saying this happens to everyone with an undefined Root. There are healthy expressions of a de-conditioned open Root.

I’m just sharing my experience, which happens to be a common one for open/undefined Roots.

You function with high cortisol in over drive for so long that your dysregulated HPA axis eventually gives way into burn out and adrenal fatigue.

This is also more common for Non-Sacrals (Projectors, Manifestors and Reflectors) because you already need more rest and time to dump out.

So, if you have an open Root, and taking care of your adrenals is not on your radar, I wanted to share this to help prevent you from falling into burnout.

Ways to Work With Your Undefined/Open Root ::

Carving out intentional time alone in your own energy (no screens, etc.) is always number one way to de-condition any part of your chart. When you know what it feels like to be in your own energy without outside influence, you become more aware of when you’re taking on other’s energy. It also gives you time to “dump out” anything you’ve taken on throughout the day.

Somatic movement like shaking can be incredibly helpful for releasing the pressure you’ve taken on throughout the day. This is only true if you are not fully into a dysregulated HPA axis or have cortisol issues – high or low, as shaking can trigger histamine responses. If you already have histamine or cortisol issues, I recommend gentle movement, like walking, or yoga (no shaking) instead.

Caffeine, the beloved caffeine, can actually be pretty detrimental to someone with an undefined Root (in general but especially if adrenals have been affected over time). Caffeine puts added pressure on your adrenals, stimulating a release of cortisol. It also adds to your epinephrine and norepinephrine, which can trigger a fight/flight response, and overtime cause an imbalance in these hormones as well. A lot of us undefined Roots rely on caffeine to kick start our mornings or get us up to speed with the rest of the world (who have defined Roots), but long term use or over use can contribute to things falling out of balance. Caffeine (because of it’s affects on cortisol and the adrenals) adds to the pressure open/undefined Roots already feel. You’re already filling your cup of pressure up with your first cup of coffee in the morning. So, anything you add to it the rest of the day, only adds more stress and pressure on your adrenals.

Now I’m not saying ditch your morning ritual, but I am encouraging you to monitor how you feel, like truly monitor how you feel with and without caffeine. If you’ve been struggling with stress, it may help to find a slower, less triggering morning ritual drink.

Reparenting/Coaching yourself through stress helps you rewire your natural response to the pressure. We inherently want to get rid of any pressure we feel, it’s uncomfortable, and since you don’t have a filtering system for it, the faster you get rid of it the better. The problem with this is that to do lists are often long, and not something we can accomplish in a day. So setting realistic goals and then creating boundaries around work or to-do lists is incredibly important to not overdo it. You typically don’t know you’re overdoing it with an open Root until it’s too late. So having a separate area for work if you work from home, that you can walk away from is helpful. Coaching yourself that the to-do list will be there tomorrow and you did enough for today… that your worth is also not determined by how much you do.

And as always, find relaxing hobbies and self-care rituals to help rebalance stress responses. Nervous system regulation is incredibly important for anyone, but people with open Roots benefit from the intentional methods used in nervous system regulation.

It’s also helpful to know when to take time away from others. Which I understand can be hard if you live with someone, but the people you live with are always conditioning you and vice versa. So, going on walks in nature alone, taking time in your own space to journal, meditate, take a bath, etc. can be really helpful to “dump out” anything you’re taking on.

And finally, the internet. It’s a weird concept, but we are energetically taking things on from others through our screen. If you don’t believe me, go on Tiktok, YouTube, horror movies, etc.  and watch a few stressful videos and then pay attention to how your body feels. Your adrenal function is affected, you may become emotionally dsyregulated, your dopamine is also affected. So, it’s important to monitor what you’re watching, for how long, and how close you watch things surrounding when you wakeup and are going to sleep.
